Gordon Parks (American Gothic, Washington D.C. photographer, Life photographer, writer / director of Shaft, etc.) and Ralph Ellison collaborated first on an article "Harlem is Nowhere" and continued to work together for a decade or so. This book is the documentation of that collaboration as it was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. It has essays to tell the reader of the significance of these two great culture makers' collaboration, notebook pages, contact sheets (with editing markups), Ellison's text, and great quality prints of Parks' photographs. This really is a landmark book when you consider both of these persons broke barriers set against them by excelling beyond others in their creative fields. The cover photograph / "A ManBecomes Invisible" with Ellison underneath a manhole cover emerging from the street posing for Parks (or one of the alternates from the same shoot) should be just as famous as Parks' American Gothic, Washington D.C. as it makes such a statement. The shot that goes with "Who am I? How did I come to be? Behind the endless walls of his ghetto man searches for a social identity." fits so well with this text. Obviously these two had similar experiences and knew what they wanted to express about being African-American in Harlem prior to the Civil Rights movement. In "Individual failures (E) when taken as proof of inferiority of all Negroes, injure entire group as vitally as man (F) who has been struck by car. To protect oneself from casual violence and to reassert one's individuality, one learns to turn one's head (G)." You see how casual observations by outsiders make assumptions without actually knowing the circumstances and that it is better not to speak up to the authorities when something did happen. In other words, African-Americans did not have a better option than being an invisible man, otherwise they would be castigated for what an outsider saw in Harlem as "their problem" instead of the circumstances that created the real problem. The plates of Ellison's handwritten notes are as valuable as Parks' photographs showing you the thoughts that went into their collaboration. Parks also shows in some of his finished combined images how creative he was (evident in also in the films he shot) back 40 years before Photoshop. They brilliantly are able to capture in quote "non-documentary" style what Ellison wanted to convey in his words that seem like fiction but were real.

New writing by Ralph Ellison, although of the non-fiction variety, along with wonderful photographs by Gordon Parks that capture aspects of both the novel and the essays--what more, really, could a retired English professor want? The book is coffee-table size, but it is the rare large book that one picks up and reads easily, so fine is the quality of the paper and images. This is a wonderful book.

The overall quality of the book is most impressive. As a literature teacher who shares Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man with her students, I find this text to be a gorgeous addition to our studies.

What can I say? It's a Gordon Parks' book!!

So grateful that this long lost duet has finally been released on the world.
